We’ve Planted!!!!  Yea after 3 weeks of waiting for the rain to stop we (ie: DT) was able to till and plant our winter vegetable garden.

As you can see we still have some of our huge Okra plants, and a few pepper plants.  They have slowed down a bit so we will probably pull them up in a few weeks. Just this week we have finally gotten a little cooler weather in the 60’s and wow its been nice for south texas.

I just love the view of the freshly tilled rows.

And love even more that DT does all the work.

So DT also planted all the plants that I carefully plotted out, and it rained the next night, perfect.  I just love it when things work out like that.  Let me show you want we planted.

Front view of the garden

Right row is small cabbage plants, about 15 of them, then the “empty” row next to them DT planted Carrot seeds, so we should be seeing sprouts in a few days.

This is our mystery summer squash, yes its late to plant these but we will see if they produce before our first frost.

This is the side view, you see our banana pepper plants, but the “empty” row to the far left is spinach, lettuce and swiss chard

Isn’t it interesting to look at all the empty rows??   Don’t answer that!

So this is the back view of the garden

as you can see our bell peppers are still doing great

This is our broccoli plants

and our Brussel sprouts, first time planting these, I am super excited I just love fresh Brussel sprouts.

This is my glorious Pumpkin Pie plants, don’t they look lovely,  Please grow please grow.

Just once in my life I would like to grow my own pumpkins….

Sadly worms got a hold some of the  leaves, but they are some blooms so my hopes are still high for my pumpkins!

DT also planted a whole row of turnips, also a first for us.  Last year we were given some turnips from a friend and I made Pioneer Women’s  Turnip Gratin, and became a forever changed woman.  I just love turnips. So I can’t wait to try even more turnip recipes, anyone have any good ones?

This row has spinach, then a marker for swiss chard, and then a marker for bib lettuce. No sprouts yet, so this makes for some really interesting pictures.

We also have planted, some red beets (which I’ve never eaten in my whole life, and don’t have a clue what to do with them) any suggestions?

and cauliflower

One question I get asked alot is how do we keep pests out of the garden, and the short answer is

The Wrangler

Long answer- electric fence, yes we zap them, dogs and babies included….

Only kidding about the babies part we turn it off when they are out side.

I also have to show off the newest addition to our little chicken coop!!

Meet the Two Wyandottes chickens, Sugar and Cream.  They have the sweetest personalities for chickens, they run up to me when I come in and are very afraid of the other chickens, who tend to pick on them.  We got them from DT’s parents and we are going to do a swap out of 3 of our chickens for 3 more wyandottes, I am so excited.  These chickens are seriously so cute.

So that’s my tour of the garden this week, hopefully next week we be more interesting and lots more growth!

  1. Garden planted, great! Where’s the monthly update on the boys?
That’s what this great aunt wants to see!!!

  2. I still have peppers of every kind in my garden too. The turnips are coming though. My children don’t care for turnips – I think I burnt them out with the mashed p’turnips – make just like mashed potatoes. It’s wonderful to have a garden, isn’t it? I’ll have to post some pics of mine. What a great idea.
Blessings for a wonderful winter garden.

  3. This is wonderful! It reminds me of when I was young and I would go to my grandpa’s farm and help him pick vegetables. Those were some of my best memories. And there is nothing like preparing the food that you helped plant and then pick. It’s amazing. And it’s so wonderful your boys will get to have that experience too. Living here in San Antonio my girls will probably never get to experience that. Thank you so much for sharing! -April

  4. Your winter garden looks wonderful….you’re all set! Cole and Bella came home from kindergarten a few days ago with little planters that they had planted a pumpkin seed in. One of them is actually growing so they convinced me to plant pumpkin seeds in the garden area. I have no clue if they’ll grow but we’ll see.

I had no idea you could grow carrots and broccoli at this time of year!!! I just finally ripped out the last of the zucchini and tomato plants…they would NOT stop growing. We’re all so sick of zucchini and tomatoes that I finally just pulled them out. It’s like they had a life of their own or something.

  5. I love love love your garden…always inspires me. I am ripping my garden out ( the rest of it) hopefully today and then putting it away for the winter so to speak.
Those are adorable chickens!!!!!! Are you raising them for meat or eggs or both or pets?

  6. Winter Garden… two words you just don’t hear in the same sentence around here. 😉 I picked two more zucchini yesterday, and still have lots of green tomatoes, but I don’t know if they will ever ripen. It’s too cool now, but we haven’t had a frost yet.

  7. WOW!!! So jealous that you can have a winter garden…just gets too cold in the Northwest to do much of anything during the fall and winter. I did a ton of things w/beets this summer. My favorite is to pickle them, but the rest of my family won’t eat them. I make “pink” pancakes for my kids w/a plain, cooked beet puree and they LOVE them. I also just found a recipe that I’m dying to try for “raspberry” perserves. It is mainly cooked down beets and beet juice w/the addition of some raspberry Jello…if you want the recipes…just let me know! Good luck w/ the garden!! ~Diana
