I find it rather funny calling this my winter garden, when its 85 today! Can you ladies up north send some cooler air down? I need it desperately. I want to wear a jacket, I want to feel the cold air blow through my hair and send a chill down my spine. I want to enjoy sipping hot cocoa, or eating a big ole warm bowl of soup.
But I guess thats the life we’ve chosen down here in South Texas. Hot summers and cool (85 degrees) winters…….
Moving on.
The garden is doing fantastic, we’ve had a good rain and the garden thoroughly enjoyed it. Everything is coming up green and growing strong.
Well everything but the pumpkin. Yes the pumpkin is still hanging on by a thread. Sad I know, I shouldn’t even show this poor pitiful pumpkin on its death-bed, but I just wanted to prove that not everything we grow turns out as we would like. I say we but really it was me, DT didn’t and hasn’t done a single thing to my pumpkins, so maybe it really is his green thumb.
But we finally pulled out the 10 foot Okra, and I couldn’t be happier. I just don’t know what it is but those incessant okra just got on my last nerve. They wouldn’t die, and worse yet they just kept producing, and producing, and producing. I mean what do they think were doing here, growing vegetables or what. Ok so maybe we are growing vegetables, and I do like Okra, but I really don’t like handling them, they have little prickly hairs that I must be allergic to if they touch my hands they seem to burn and sting for hours. I don’t like that much. But I do love how they taste. So I was wearing gloves quite a bit. Bye Bye gloves.
Here is the front view of the garden, and the disturbed patches of dirt are were the old huge okra once stood!
As for our peppers, were still getting bucket’s full and we haven’t pulled the plants yet.
The Broccoli is growing strong
as is the cabbage
and brussel sprouts
The carrots are growing you can really see their frilly little tops now
The lettuce is growing strong, please ignore all the excess grass, we really need to do some weeding
and the turnips are growing at a rapid rate
so are the beets, I just love their beautiful red stems
spinach, seems like we could already pick some baby leaves. I think I am going to get DT to plant some more, we can always use more spinach
and finally the back view of the garden
So how is your climate? Are you able to grow a fall garden or are you already enjoying all the finer things cold weather has to offer?
I will be posting weekly of the garden so please click on each week for more details. week 1, week 2

No fall garden here. We’ve already been through a hard frost!
We can probably plant a fall garden here, southern cal… but well my thumb isn’t too green.
Your garden looks great!
It’s such a treat playing this meme with you every week. I love keeping track of the garden and the boys and seeing what new culinary masterpiece you will cook up. I have a little something for you today.
I would happily trade hot cocoa for fresh veggies in November. When was the last time you had to purchase a vegetable?
I’d send ya some cold…….
sorry abt the pumpkin the rest looks great though.
Your poor pumpkin is being eaten!
Something ate my lettuce and broccoli and turnips! The beets are growing. The spinach doesn’t seem to want to grow. We are normally starting to harvest by now from the first planting, but I have had to replant 5 times! I had a few escape. Also, SOME of my radishes came up, but most have not (and those were from the third planting).
It’s time for us to plant the sugar snap peas, so those will get planted tomorrow.
I don’t know what is eating everything yet but it’s been such a bumer to continue to see empty spots.
1. The opening line of your tag cloud says: 30 day shred babies. Just struck me as funny.
2. I will be sending you cold air. Soon. Actually sooner than soon. It has been in the high thirties overnight recently. Highs in the mid forties during the day with a consistent cloud cover.
3. I am not really complaining (kind of, I am complaining) but I really don’t mind this weather. It is when we get to the point where we are scraping the car windows …
4. Happy Fx4 😉
We are “enjoying winter”. Gosh, I can’t wait for fall:-)
Great post, thank you for sharing.
To ready, plant tend watch grown and harvest is so rewarding …
Thank you for sharing and have a GRAND weekend.
Your garden looks like a delicious future. Good luck!
I was exhausted at the summer garden. You have a winter garden too????????????
You’re my idol.
No winter gardens in Kansas, but our fall has been beautiful! Today my kids are out with light jackets. Perfect. 🙂
