The boys’ closet and toys have been neglected for some time now.  As embarrassing as it is to say, we used laundry baskets to throw their toys in, no organization, just whatever went where ever.  It was a mess.  A huge, annoying, thorn in my side mess.

I finally had enough.  After their birthday and Christmas our house is/was overflowing with toys.  It was time for a huge massive toy reduction.  2 bags of trash bags and 3 donation bags later.  That’s a lot of crap to get out of there!

I found this really cute organizer at Target and thought that would fit perfectly in the closet.

Each basket holds a specific toy type, like one has cars and trucks, blocks, tools, and so on.

Larger toys are on the sides of the closet, so they can easily access them.

One of the best improvements, besides visually and my sanity, is that the boys actually will pick up and put the toys back where they belong, since they each have a designated spot.  I guess we will see how long that lasts.

How do you keep your child’s room and toys organized?

  1. Oh hon… lol. Resign yourself to the fact that it will probably be a mess and stay a mess til they move out. I used to force them to clean for years. All it did was stress ME out. I got to the point where I realized that their room is their own personal space. So they are responsible for the upkeep. Sometimes you will find as they get older that they will clean it by themselves before a party or sleepover or a play date. And if not, those are great times to ‘remind’ them to do it. And if it doesn’t get done? Shut the door and don’t worry about it. :o)

  2. The closet looks great. We use a lot of baskets for organization. We moved a few months ago and we got rid of A LOT of toys! It was so nice. My kids also have lofts in the playroom of our new house so that helps keep their rooms a little neater.

  3. Jenna,

We have the same organizers. I have the big one like you and then I have 2 tall ones. One is for their books and then they other was used for baby stuff and after Christmas I had to get more boxes and use it for toys. I love these shelfs and recommend them to all my friends.

  4. We love our bins, when Emery was little I had pictures of what went in the bins on the outside to encourage picking up (she couldn’t claim she didn’t know what went in there!) Then I had the word written under it so that she would learn the word. I have fallend off that wagon since then, but at the time it was really a good plan–maybe I will reinstate it! Ha!

  5. I have the same thing times two in my son’s room. Makes it very cool to organize toys. He’s OK at putting them back where they belong but I still need to help.

I need to buy two more for the twins room. Just waiting till I have time to get them assembled and organized!
