Every year around this time I start questioning why we plant so many squash, because they ultimately start to consume your life, there is only some much squash 4 people can eat. It never fails I think well let only plant 4 zucchini 4 yellow squash, but 4 turns into at least 8 each. Because you never know a few may die for unknown reasons or never bloom. But it always ends up in this same situation, the squash are soon going to take over, yikes!
So far we’ve picked, zucchini, yellow squash, patty pan squash, cucumbers, green beans, banana peppers and the occasional tomato.
Check out the patty pan squash, that one is so huge it has to break some kinds of records, lol!
Because of the massive amounts of rain we weren’t able to go in the garden for 2 days and some of the squash got huge!
Luckily I have no short supply or great squash recipes, and I can shred and freeze it fairly easily.
We did have about 8 inches of rain over a 2 day period that did quite the number on our peppers and tomatoes. They look very wilted and I hope they will pull through, everything else seemed to love the rain. I don’t have any pictures of the garden this week, but just trust me it looks pretty pitiful.
Though as if I have gone crazy enough with my chickens, I ordered more. Yes after my failed hatch resulting in 5 chicks, I felt so empty alone and sad, that I immediately ordered 12 chicks from Ideal Hatchery. I know I need help, is there a chicken hot line somewhere?
My hatched chicks took to the new ones just fine, in fact they were all cuddly and sleeping in piles in no time.
Any-who my new chickies arrived yesterday all perfectly healthy and happy.
I ordered 3 Ameracuana also know as Easter Eggers, I just love this breed they come in a variety of coloring, have sweet silly personalities, and lay colored eggs.
2 Salmon Favorelles, another sweet chicken with puffy cheeks, 5 toes and feathered legs, they are just too darn cute.
1 partridge rock, I just love my Rocks, they lay really well and have fun personalities. All my white girls, Pesky, Sally are White Rocks. But this one will have a beautiful brown lacing.
and 6 surprise pullets, literally the hatchery chooses which pullets to add, so far all six are different breeds and I am still not sure on a few of them. But they are so cute! I think I have a Ancona, Buff Orpington, Lakenvelder, and the other 3 I have no clue. I will just have to wait until they feather out.
They also sent us 7 “packing peanuts” which turned out to be barred rock roosters, they add them in to small orders to make sure they are warm enough and handle the shipping process. We already have a home for these since we can’t keep roosters at our house.
This is the last of the chicks, chickens and hatching for a long long time. Bless DT for putting up with me.
I will be posting weekly of the garden so please click on each week for more details. Week 1, week 2, week 5, week 6

Aw, such cute little chickies!!
Our little guys are already out in their coop, we couldn’t belive how fast they grew!
Wow, you’re getting so much stuff from your garden already. Sadly I just haven’t been able to get any squash to grow this year, but we had so much of it last year too, and some of them got huge when we couldn’t see them under all the leaves to harvest them 🙂 Love your little chikkies too. I did get green beans to eat this week though, and I posted an update at my blog… come over and see 🙂
Have a great weekend.
You’re already getting food from your garden?? WOW! And it all looks so beautiful. 🙂
Those little chickens are too cute. You’re starting to make me want to buy some of my own!
The fact that they refer to roosters as “packing peanuts” is hysterical!
You know, honestly, I never really saw anything cute about chickens but the baby chicks are adorable!! It’s easy to see why you love them so much!
Your zucchini looks amazing! I remember last year mine were out of control…I was practically begging neighbors to take some! This year I just thinned them out so we only have 2 plants and I know even that will be too much. I hate thinning because it makes me nervous that as soon as I do it, that’s when the plants that are left will die!
Hello! I’m stopping by from The Inspired Room. Thank you for sharing these sweet, sweet photos of your little chickies! I adore them! Especially those Easter Eggers. Oh my. How cute. And loving your beautiful produce! How awesome.
Blessings,
Marie
That’s quite a collection. Can’t wait to see what they look like when they’re all “feathered out”! =)
Ah ha…so we are not the only ones overcome with squash. My hubby only planted 2 zucchini plants, and I pick 4-7 a week. Last week, b/c of the rain, I picked one so big, it weighed 2 pounds, 11 ounces! You must make Pioneer Woman’s Zucchini cakes…they are SO GOOD!
Your garden pictures look like a Farmer’s Market!! Wow!
Love the pics of your peeps. So cute!
Babies are so cute and sweet!! Chicks are adorable when they’re still little balls of fluff!!!
I, too, laughed at “packing peanuts.”
There IS a hotline for chicken lovers, but from friends who visit that site it is as addicting as the chickens themselves.
That is crazy!!
I love your chickies! Your garden is CRAZY! At least you know what to do with all the food. And if you know of someone who has an iguana, they LOVE zucchini.
I just picked up a vintage chicken feeder for a buck! I already have a small hen house. Now all I need are two or three hens. Thank’s for sharing your cute chicks….Julian
I’ve been looking at pictures of your garden, and it is amazing! We used to live in Cleveland, TX and had 3 acres and a big garden next to our house. Because of all the pine trees on the property, we never seemed to get quite enough sun to make the garden “take off”.
I raised chickens when I was a child, and I wanted to get some in TX, but we backed up to a nature preserve, and either foxes or raccoons took away the sweet ducks we had in our pond, so we were afraid to try chickens. Good luck with your “new” batch.
Wow, everything looks just amazing. I love zuccihini and planted it for the first time this year in our gardent. Can’t wait till I can starting cooking and baking with it. P.S. the Chicks are sooooo cute at that stage.
What do you feed all your chickens and is it real expensive??? We are thinking about starting up some garden poop, kidding I want to have chicken love like you!!
that’s so amazingly cool! I love the idea of chicks, I’m just not sure I really have what it takes to really do it.
I can’t imagine having produce from the garden already. Wow!
