I have people ask me all the time, how did I learn or even think about making baby food. I learned it all from Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron. I highly recommend buying this book if you are interested in making baby food. She goes through every possible detail for making food for your baby through toddler years. Plus look on amazon for cheaper used books.

Getting started making homemade baby food. Start off simply and slowly. Maybe set a goal of making 1-3 fruits or veggies each weekend.

I always make large batches and freeze them in ice cube trays. This way when its time to feed your little one you just pop a few out of the freezer zip locks bags and nuke them in the microwave for about 30 sec and your ready to serve.

For instance I recently made Cantaloupe (since the boys are old enough to eat this now 8 months) The book also details what age to introduce each food.

Cantaloupe is a easy food because you don’t have to cook it, just simply cube it

But if you were making say sweet potatoes, clean them well, then prick the outside of the potatoes with a fork, and on a plate microwave for 4-6 minutes, or until fully cooked, then scoop out and puree.

blend it in your blender or food processor

spoon the puree into your ice cube trays

Label and freeze (did I misspell cantelope?) or is it cantaloupe?

Once it is frozen then transfer the cube into freezer storage bags, label again.

It will stay good in the freezer for several months.

  1. I may could actually do this…..IF I have a reason to in the future I may be picking your brain!

  2. This is an awesome post! I make baby food this way every day. Who wants to have Gerber preservatives in their baby food? I love this because the ice cube size is just the right amount, it’s so much cheaper, and the baby can eat whatever the rest of the family is eating. Thank you so much for this and I loved your pictures, too!

  3. I have that book in my amazon wish list right now, we’re in the process of adopting and I definitely want to make my own baby food when the time comes.
