On Mother’s Day I made these yummy treats to take to our families’ potluck dinner. They are so good and the perfect travel food, not to mention a snap to make. Really, the hardest part is waiting for them to cool. Oh, the wait is torturous.
They are called Magic Bars, because you turn around and they magically disappear! Everyone loves them.
It can be our little secret at how easy they are to make, okay?
Ingredients: 1 cup sweetened flaked coconut; 1 stick butter, melted; 10 graham crackers, crushed; 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts; 1 cup chocolate chips; 1-15 ounce can sweetened condensed milk
To start, crush your graham crackers. I simply used a zip lock bag and mallet.
In your 9 X 13 pan, pour in melted butter. I simply melted the stick of butter for about 40 seconds in the microwave.
Then evenly spread the crumbs.
Press them down with the back of the measuring cup, try to make the crust even.
Then sprinkle on the nuts,
chocolate chips,
and shredded coconut.
Then evenly pour on the sweetened condensed milk.
Seriously that simple!
Bake at 350° for 25 minutes or so, until the tops are golden brown. Let cool about 1 hour before serving.
They are also really yummy with a glass of cold milk. Mmmm…
These bars also go by many different names? Have you tried them? If so, what do you call them?

I’ve been making these for over 30 years and we call them Magic Cookie Bars. I put my butter in the baking dish and put it in the oven while it heats and the butter is melted by the time the oven is hot! My daughter works at a country club and they make these for events with cookie trays. They make them gourmet with large chunks of dark and white chocolate and yummy things like macadamia nuts. She has brought home the leftovers when they are going to be thrown out and they are devine!
These delicious bar cookies seem to be making a comeback. My mom made them in the 50s and 60s, my MIL sends them to my grown sons every Christmas. and now my sons are making them. They’re easy, delicious, but for me…too sweet (and too much “sugar”). Some older cookbooks call them 7-layer bars or Hello Dollies…
These look really good, and I bet I could use gluten-free ginger snaps or graham crackers with no loss in flavor. Thanks for sharing!
My family LOVES these bars! And they’re so quick and easy, too!
My Mom makes those bars and calls them 7 layered bars. I always love a good bar 🙂 (and not just the establishment).
We LOVE these – we call them, travel bars (and make them w/o the nuts). They acquired that name because they came along on all our road trips… they are amazing when they sit in a warm car and get all gooey and melty.
My goodness, it is almost 11 at night and I want to go make these right now! My mouth is watering! I will be making these this weekend!
I am looking for baked treats that can stand heat for bake sales for my kid’s swim team. These look like they would hold up. What do you think?
