I realized the other day it’s been quite some time since my last chicken post, and I know how everyone just adores these posts. At least I think everyone loves my chickens posts? I can imagine can’t I?
I like to introduce you to my two “hopeful broodies”. Broody is the term that means a hen is ready to sit on a clutch of eggs for 21 days straight, in order to incubate and hatch chicks, and then care for the chicks afterward. I have yet to have a broody hen, I do all my incubating myself, the hard way.
Some breeds are known for being great broodies like Silkies and Cochins, of which I have neither. So I am hoping that one of my gals next spring will raise a clutch, it would just make my heart go Pitter Pat.
Though I have a couple of gals that display some broody tendencies and it only make me even more hopeful.
First up is Penny my Easter egger. Penny was a skittish chick, but once she started laying eggs, she is my best buddy. If I am sitting outside, she always stops by to give me a cluck. She also gifts me with beautiful blueish/green eggs.
But if you catch Penny on the nest, you better watch out.
She will let out a Raptor scream bad enough to scare the daylights out of anyone.
Which in turn makes a wonderful broody hen, because nothing will mess with her or her eggs.
Would you mess with this face?
My other potential broody is Pumpkin the black Australorp.
Pumpkin has been a sweet chicken since the very beginning. She loves the boys and always lets them handle her. Her black/greenish plumage is just beautiful she has the softest feathers. She give us a beautiful brown egg every day and is just the perfect chicken.
But she has also started the Raptor scream and sitting on the nest well past the usual amounts of time.
My fingers are crossed.
Because God knows I need more chickens!!!
Yes, I love your chicken posts and tell all my friends who get chickens that they need to come and read your posts. I have one friend who got a bunch of silkies. They love them too!
I was hoping to start back shredding on Monday but it’s Thursday and well, I haven’t done it yet. On a brighter note, I did complete my 3rd 5K on Saturday. I’m sharing a couple of pictures tomorrow on my blog.
Penny scares me. She looks fierce.
Chicken posts are always welcome!
They both look quite intimidating. I hope it works!
