We took the boys to Brazos bend state park last week, it’s unlike any park they’ve ever been too.  So they were a bit confused, when we got there, was it the water park, playground park?

The main attraction at this state park besides it’s vast hiking trails and lakes.  Are alligators!!

Yes alligators live in the hundreds at this park, just roaming about freely doing what gators do.

With that many living here you would have thought we would have see at least one.

Well we did, but that was a the visitors center, not out in the wild.

We did see lots of other fun stuff though.

We walked slowly through on the the trails not wanting to miss any little things, I mean, heck a gator could be hiding in the bushes for all I know.  Ok not really, but I was a bit skittish.

On their website there is even an alligator etiquette, which I may mention is enough to scare the crap out of me.  Like I said luckily we did walk up on any or even see any far into the lakes, though we looked hard for them.

It really is a neat place with wonderful staff and volunteers that were more than willing to let us pet a baby gator, she said this one was about 1 year old, and would soon be released to a foster mother gator that is already raising some babies.

The boys liked petting the baby gator, and pressing all the exhibit buttons and touching everything they aren’t suppose to.

They also had some snakes like this Texas Rattlesnake, if you look closely you can see the rattle, and behind the snake is some skin it shed. *shudder*

As we left the visitor center we went to the nearest trail around Creek field lake.

Wen saw this huge spider snacking on a bug.

The lake was covered in this green duckweed, and lots of really cute birds everywhere.

We even spotted a little rabbit right off the trail.

A pretty blue dragon fly, sunning on a log.

We saw these pretty bright pinkish/purplish berries bushes all over the place, anyone know what they are?  (This is a BeautyBerry bush, thanks Candi)

Lots of huge bullfrogs, that every time they jumped in the water, my heart skipped a beat, thinking it was a gator.

and lots and lots of beautiful Lilly pads.

It was a lot of fun, even if you’re a pip squeak like me.

  1. I’d have been fine till we saw the spider. Those things TERRIFY me! But then again, I grew up near the swamps of Florida so Alligators and their oft’ confused cousins Crocodiles are fun to me.

I love that your boys are getting to learn about such neat creatures!

  2. I love the part about the alligators having the right of way in the rules of etiquate–and safety. I have been there and seen alligators, but none were sunning themselves in the road. You got some great photos on your trip!
