As I like to call it, or  Brazos Bend State Park.  A really fun place to visit on a cool Tuesday morning.

Mom and I have been to this park several times, never to see an Alligator except at the visitor’s center, but none in the wild.

So my goal was to see at least 1 gator and I would leave for home happy.

On our first trail we saw some beautiful birds.

This guy would dive under and pop his head out of the water every minute or so, pretty cool to watch.

A big fat Bull Frog

even a snake sunning himself on a large log (anyone know what kind of snake this is?)

Then at our second trail, SCORE, we saw a little gator, about 3 feet we guessed.  The visitor center employees told us if the gator still has stripes it’s probably 4 years old or under.  And, if you measure the distance between the gator’s eyes and nose in inches, for each inch is probably 1 foot in length.

The boys liked this guy since they are about the same age as they are and named him Ali baby.

I was so happy to finally see a gator in the wild, trip fulfilled.

But then we see another guy hiding under the deck.

Do you see that Observation Tower way across the lake?  Let’s walk there, shall we?

This huge guy was greeting us at the beginning of the trail.  I am guessing his length is about 12 feet and he was only about 5 feet away from the edge of the trail!!!!  That will get your heart beating.

Or maybe just mine, as others walked by I pointed out the huge beast hiding in the water and they would slightly glance over, never slow down, and say cool….  So I guess it was only really cool to me and dare I say slightly exhilarating?  I was just picturing all the things that gator could do if he really wanted too.  And in that scenario what would we do?  Run was the only option that made sense to me.

Look at him in comparison to that large log, see his eyes? See his Tail?  See how close to the water’s edge he is?

As we walk along we see no fewer than about 10 more gators of varying sizes and activities.

This one was eating, pretty cool!

These two were sunning.

This guy was mud bathing.

We made it, and I am so glad we did.

Safe and sound we made it.

Mom said I had my gator eyes on, because I could spot those gators good.  I just knew one was going to pop out from behind a bush or something.

I even dreamed about this sucker last night, I dreamed he grabbed Little W by the leg and pulled him under the water. What’s a Mom to do but jump in after him, jump and kick and punch and rescue my child, unharmed.  That’s how the dreamed played out at least.

Overall slightly scary or not, I really really love this park!

  1. Ok, I had no idea this place existed…so now I have to go so I too can have terrible dreams about gators!! Both the kids love them, well Emery did until the zoo keeper in Victoria told the kids that the gator ate a whole chicken. Now she doesn’t like them so much.

  2. That would be something my kids would love! We visit a little wildlife reserve in Savannah (we call it Alligator Alley). There are usually a few alligators to see.

  3. I took AB when KB had a field trip there and I never took him back again. I was nervous the whole time, looking for trees I could climb with one arm while the other would be around AB.

  4. Oh I just LOVE this post! I love these kind of parks too, but none here really. Booo! I love how the boys are held with a tight grip in the one pic, lol! GREAT PICTURES! You’re a great photog!
