Wyatt and Hayden both raised and showed meat rabbits (Californians) for the 4h program this year, and we had seven rabbits and we processed them as a family; saved the meat, rabbit feet and pelts (Hayden wants to make something out of the fur).  Wyatt really wanted to make Lucky Rabbit feet key chains.  So we looked up how to do it and it’s surprisingly simple and fun little summer project.

*now in Wyatt’s words*

Hi, I am Wyatt, I am 10 years old. I like to drive 4-wheelers, playing videos games, swimming, watching scary movies, and riding my bike.  I want to be an engineer when I grow up.  I love playing with my friends, baseball, and camping in our camper.  This summer I hope to go to the water park a bunch, make homemade ice cream, and go to a trampoline park with friends.

Making rabbit feet key chains was fun to do, and you can do this too.  I learned that making rabbit feet is easier than I thought.  I didn’t know anything about it until now.  It was fun to find videos on youtube about it, and kinda cool and creepy at the same time.  Let me show you how.  and if you want to skip all the steps, I am selling them too!  $5 each!

First step was to clean the rabbit feet with soap and water.

Scrub them really good with soap several times.

And rinse clean with water.

Then soak them in 70% rubbing alcohol for 2 days.  We put our in mason jar.

Then drain the alcohol, rinse again with water.

Put back into the mason jars, and add 2 tablespoons of borax to each jar.

Then fill with water, stir or shake well.  Let sit for 24 hours.

Then rinse feet extremely well and squeeze out excess water.

We decided to try dyeing some of the feet, we got Rid fabric dye in blue, red and green.

We used disposable bowls adding in the feet, some dye and water, and stirred well and let sit about 20 minutes.

Then we rinsed the excess dye out of the feet, and set them outside (in a protected area) to dry for a week.

Once fully dried, it was time to add the key chain pieces

We used Gorilla Epoxy , jingle bells, and key chains loops.

I opened up the jingle bells and removed the bell.

The end of the foot then fits perfectly into the bell.

We put the epoxy into the end of the bell and then the foot and let them dry well pinching down

the sides of the bell onto the foot and adding the loop

Finished product.

We now have lucky rabbits feet key chains!!

Red, turquoise, natural or purple.

You too can have the luck of a rabbits foot for $5 each.  Please contact Wyatt to purchase.

He will be thrilled to mail you one.
